Miller students create city models for contest

Miller Middle School students and a mentor are pictured with their city model project as part of the Future City contest held in Cedar Rapids on January 20. Pictured are Miller students, from left,  Jonny Needs, Madi Ricken and Jackie Diaz and local engineer Justin Strom from Clapsaddle-Garber Associates.

Miller Middle School students built city models and presented them as part of a competition called Future City at Prairie Point Middle School in Cedar Rapids on January 20. The students were participating in the project as part of a Miller Project Based Learning class from teacher Shan Mooney.

As they researched for the project, students learned about city infrastructure, scale and zoning and toured The Embers retirement community.

“The problem this year for the competition was to think of ways to make life better for senior citizens,” Mooney said. “We took a tour of The Embers to see what their facility has to offer seniors.”

Models were built mostly from recycled materials. The group also enlisted the help of engineer Justin Strom from the Marshalltown-based civil engineering and land surveying firm Clapsaddle-Garber Associates.

“He helped the students with scale and looked over their essays and critiqued the student presentations,” Mooney said. “He was a great help in the whole process.”

Miller sent two projects to the Future City contest.

“The competing students did an excellent job for our first experience at this competition and are excited to introduce the project to students next year,” Mooney said.

To be selected for the honor, students must meet three criteria: be a senior starter on the football team, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.7 or above by the end of their junior year and must be involved in other extracurricular activities.

Bohan plans to study education at the University of Northern Iowa. Mann plans to attend Marshalltown Community College and wants to study business or agriculture in the future.  Irwin plans to study biology, but is undecided on his college plans.

“All three of these guys are outstanding young men and students and are very deserving of this award,” said MHS head football coach Adam Goodvin. “They’ve put in a lot of hard work into both academics and athletics and are great leaders here at MHS. I have no doubt they will continue to work hard and be successful in whatever the future holds for them.”

Franklin Elementary School Title I reading teacher Cheri Bolar always puts others first.

“It’s my nature to be giving,” Bolar said. “That’s the nature of being a teacher.”

Her fellow Title I reading teacher at Franklin, Jacque Kopsa, thought it was time Bolar got credit for her selfless acts. Kopsa nominated Bolar for a contest through Kimball & Beecher Family Dentistry and the radio station Energy 106.7 known as the “Make Someone Smile” contest.

Bolar won the contest and won two $250 Visa gift cards. She was surprised during an on-air radio interview.

“She always goes out of her way to help others and puts other people first,” Kopsa said of Bolar. “She needs to be put first.”

Bolar organized efforts to help a Franklin family in need after a family tragedy last school year and is always looking at ways to support students and their families.

“I know that if my students get support both out of school and in school they will do better,” Bolar said.

It’s no surprise that Bolar is already thinking about how her winnings can help others, of course after she uses part of it to take Kopsa out to dinner.

“I’d like to pay it forward,” Bolar said.

Two Marshalltown Learning Academy teachers have been selected to be part of the STEM Innovator program at the University of Iowa.

Nicole Critchfield, career development and STEM coordinator at MLA, and Brighid Mathews, ELL teacher at MLA, will be taking the online course this semester and then learn on the University of Iowa campus this summer as part of the program. It is designed to help teachers learn how they can connect STEM learning in the classroom with community partners in the science, technology, engineering and math fields.

“We have STEM activities going on at MLA already,” Critchfield said. “This class is going to teach us how to take our current activities and bring in community partners.”

Mathews said this will allow her to open up STEM opportunities for the English Language Learners.

“It’s a good way to get ELL students access to high-paying jobs,” Mathews said.
