School Board President Sherm Welker and Vice President Jennifer Wilson wield the scissors as the biomedical sciences lab is officially opened at Marshalltown High School.

Gov. Terry Branstad described the Marshalltown Community School District as “truly a leader” when it comes to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiative in the state.

Branstad spoke at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Project Lead the Way labs at Marshalltown High School Monday. The ceremony recognized school and community leaders for their part in starting the new engineering and biomedical science classes at MHS, which are part of PLTW.

Positive by his nature: MHS student loves learning

Marshalltown High School Spanish teacher Sarah Whitehead said student Harry Metzger beams a huge smile when he walks into her classroom.

Lenihan students raise $1,500 for Y swim program

When students at Lenihan Intermediate School put their minds to something, big results tend to follow. The student leadership group known as Ricochet led a penny war at the school which ended up raising $1,500 for the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA teach kids to swim program.

Traveling trophies: MHS awards find temporary homes

As the Marshalltown High School Roundhouse gets updated, some of its treasures have found temporary homes until the renovation work is complete.

Dozens of trophies garnered from the storied history of Bobcat athletics have been placed in area businesses as the remodeling work goes on. Craig Huegel, athletics director at MHS, said it was important these treasures weren’t stuffed away in boxes during the renovation work.

MHS Dance Team earns top ratings at ISDTA Solo Contest

Members of the Marshalltown High School Dance Team competed at the Iowa State Dance/Drill Team Association (ISDTA) Solo Competition Nov. 2 in Newton, bringing home four Division I ratings in their debut performance at the contest.

Katie Gassman, Sydney Grewell, Sydney Kenner and Kathleen McHenry all competed at the state contest, performing solos ranging from lyrical to jazz routines. Dance Team Coach Shea Stalzer says the team is now preparing for the state team competition, where they will showcase pom and jazz routines.

MHS Drill Team brings home top scores at state contest

Members of the Marshalltown Drill Team competed at the Iowa State Dance and Drill Team Association (ISDTA) Solo Competition Nov. 2 in Newton, bringing home four Division I rankings, two Division II rankings, and one performer in the top five overall.

Missy Allen, Kaylee Clemens, Raelene McGahuey, and Libby Crawford all earned Division I ratings for their performances. Cassidy Fisher, Lily Neuan each earned Division II ratings, just two points short of Division I. All competed with nearly 700 dance and color guard soloists from across Iowa.

Crawford also placed in the top five amongst 59 competitors in her division. This is the second year in a row Crawford and earned such accolades. Her fourth place overall finish earned her a trophy and placed Marshalltown High School among the top five with students from Waukee, Dubuque Senior, Ankeny Centennial and Bettendorf.

Performances were all student-choreographed, then refined and critiqued by coaches and teammates. Students could use a variety of equipment, including flag, rifle, sabre, swing flag and other props.

The majority of this year’s drill team is comprised of soon-to-be MHS graduates, so students interested students who will enter high school next year can contact team coach Megan Assenmacher-Umthun to learn how to get involved.

Kindergartner always ready to learn: 5-year-old has goal to be a doctor

Matthew Martins is getting a great start to his school years – and has an attitude that will serve him well as he gets older.

Martins, 5, is a kindergarten student at Rogers Elementary School.

His teacher, Megan Spoo, said he sets a good example for the rest of the class.

Miller musicians perform with SCIBA Honor Band

Ten Miller Middle School students participated in the South Central Iowa Bandmasters Association (SCIBA) Honor Band Tuesday, Nov. 5, at Knoxville High School.

Participants spent six hours rehearsing for an evening concert featuring three bands: Red, White and Blue.

The participants, their instruments and band placements were:

Seventh Grade:

  • Brianna Dean, trumpet, Red
  • Jordan Blue, French horn, Red
  • Abigail Potter, Alto sax, Red
  • Emily Miller, French horn, White

Eighth Grade:

  • Olivia Arneson, French horn, White
  • Moises Garcia, tuba, Blue
  • Skylar Lindeman, clarinet, Blue
  • Victoria Johnson, baritone sax, Blue
  • Ben Harris, alto sax, Blue
  • Mollie McLain, French horn, Blue

Victoria Johnson also received the special honor of being one of 22 students selected for the Eighth Grade All-Iowa Honor Band.

Miller Middle School students sing the National Anthem at the Iowa Wild Hockey game Sunday, Nov. 3, in Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines.

Eighth grade choir students from Miller Middle School opened the Iowa Wild hockey game Sunday, Nov. 3, by performing the National Anthem for the crowd.

The performance at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines featured 40 students from the eighth grade choir.

“The students did a wonderful job in representing Miller Middle School and Marshalltown,” said Angela Radcliffe, middle school choir director.

After performing the students stayed to enjoy the hockey game.
