MHS senior earns Academic All-American Award from National Forensic League

Snyder

Snyder

Marshalltown High School senior Abby Snyder has been awarded the National Forensic League’s Academic All-American Award.

Last year, Snyder qualified for the national tournament for the third year in a row. While this is an amazing accomplishment in itself, she also had earned enough points to be nominated for the Academic All-American Award. Students who earn 750 NFL points, carry at least a 3.7 GPA, and score above a 27 on the ACT can be nominated for this award. Nominees should also possess outstanding character and leadership. Once Abby had reached the 750, there was no question in Dr. Hawk’s mind about nominating her for the award.

“Abby is an outstanding person,” said explains Dr. Janelle Hawk, the Director of Forensics at MHS. “She pushes herself to be successful in her classes, sports, band, and her many academic extra-curricular activities, such as forensics and Envirothon. She sets high expectations for herself, and helps her teammates to work toward those high expectations as well. It was a true honor to nominate Abby for this award because she is the epitome of an Academic All American.”

Marshalltown has been a member of the National Forensic League for more than 30 years, and the program has gone through many changes in those years.

“Usually, when people hear the word ‘forensics,’ they think of forensic science,” Dr. Hawk said. “Our program is about learning to be better, more confident speakers who can succeed in any career.”

Students participate in a variety of speaking, acting, and debating events at tournaments around the state throughout the year. Each time a student competes he or she earns points toward membership or degrees.

A student must earn 25 points to become a member, then will continue to earn more points to move up to higher degrees of accomplishment. The more tournaments a student attends, and the better he or she does at the tournament, the faster his or her points will grow.

MHS is also taking steps to help other schools grow their forensic programs. The school hosted a novice tournament on Saturday, Sept. 28, for individuals, schools and community members to learn more about the speech and debate program, allowing schools that already have programs to bring new recruits to practice and learn more about events in a competitive setting. Dr. Hawk also reached out to schools without programs to encourage them to come and learn more about it.

“It’s really quite exciting to share my enthusiasm for forensics with people who are curious about the program,” she said.

Dr. Hawk is confident the record of success will continue this year.

“This is going to be a great year,” she said. “I fully expect we will make it to nationals for the sixth year in a row.”

RACOM donates $25,000 to Roundhouse project

SAMSUNG CSC

RACOM Corporation of Marshalltown donated $25,000 to the Roundhouse renovation last Thursday.

Bobcat alumni Mike Miller (’86) and Nick and Carrie Loney (’93) presented the check to Marshalltown High School Principal Aiddy Phomvisay and Activities Director Craig Huegel.

“RACOM is proud to be a Diamond Sponsor for this project,” Miller said. “As company owners, supporting the Roundhouse is a huge benefit for our employees and their families as well as for the community at large.”

Aiddy Phomvisay, MHS Principal, and Craig Huegel, MHS Activities Director, accepted the $25,000 donation.  “We so appreciate the support of RACOM and the many other businesses and individuals that are stepping up to the plate!” says Huegel.

Gary Schaudt, co-chair for the MHS Roundhouse Renovation Committee says that several other businesses have shown their enthusiasm for the project, giving at the Platinum Level ($10,000 to $24,999) and Diamond Level ($25,000 or more).  To date these include: Attorneys at Law (Moore, McKibben, Goodman, Lorenz, Beals, Horn, Meade, Heitmann, and Ruopp), Emerson, Farmers Savings Bank, Great Western Bank, Independent Insurance Services, Shomo-Madsen Insurance, and the Times Republican.

Schaudt also comments that businesses are being creative and providing support in whatever way they can.  McFarland Clinic was the first business to offer a payroll deduction. Through this opportunity, Marshalltown providers and employees pledged more than $25,000.

Schaudt also encourages community members to print off coupons from the Renovate the Roundhouse page on Facebook.  Present these coupons when you’re eating at Legends or filling-up your vehicle at Jiffy, and a portion will be donated back to the Roundhouse!

To date, more than $440,000 has been raised to meet the $1 million Martha-Ellen Tye Challenge Grant.  Schaudt says, “We have been actively fundraising for just two months.  We couldn’t be happier with the support we are receiving!  We have a lot of work left to do, but thanks to the generosity of donors thus far, I feel the $3.85 million dollar goal is well within our reach!”

Pledge forms are available at www.mhsroundhouse.com.  You can also follow the fundraising efforts on Facebook at Renovate the Roundhouse.  Donations are tax deductible and should be directed to Marshalltown Community School District Foundation, P.O. Box 1562, Marshalltown, IA 50158.

Memorial tree relocated to Fisher Elementary

Hogland-Tree

Lonnie Hogeland and his son planted an evergreen tree in front of Hogeland Auto Plaza before Lonnie Jr. passed away in 1998. A few weeks ago the tree found a new home at a place once familiar to Lonnie Jr. – Fisher Elementary.

Hogeland Sr. wanted the students at Fisher to enjoy the tree, saying the school was very kind and caring to his son and family.

The tree was transplanted one recent weekend with the help of Mike Ballhagen of Trees-to-Go.

Marshalltown Schools receive PE, nutrition grant

Marshalltown Community School District is the recipient of one of 60 grants under the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP).

Marshalltown Schools will receive $494,201 in year one of the three-year grant out of the combined $32 million awarded Monday by the U.S. Department of Education. Funding is intended to assist with initiating, expanding, or enhancing physical education and nutrition education programs, including after-school programs, for students in grades K-12. The PEP program is aligned with and supports First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Active Schools initiative to get kids moving before, during and after school.

“Through the collaborative effort of the Healthier Communities Coalition in Marshalltown, we have laid the groundwork toward educating students and families about the benefits of physical activity and healthy eating habits,” said Matt Tullis, director of equity and learning supports and coordinator of the district Safe Schools/Healthy Students initiative. “We know there is a direct link between physical fitness and student achievement. This project will move us toward our goals and will certainly benefit all of Marshalltown.”

In 2013, PEP applicants were invited to align their proposals with seven “design filters” for creating engaging, high-quality physical activity programs. Applicants could also receive points for focusing their efforts on the persistently lowest-achieving schools in their area. More than half of awardees chose to address one or both of these two new priority areas for the PEP program.

“Healthy, active students do better in school and in life,” said Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education. “These grants will help schools and communities educate students on the value of healthy lifestyles through programs that get kids moving and teach lifelong healthy habits.”

All PEP grant recipients must implement programs that help students make progress toward meeting their state standards for physical education. In addition, these programs must undertake 1) instruction in healthy eating habits and good nutrition, and 2) physical fitness activities that include at least one of the following:

  • Fitness education and assessment to help students understand, improve, or maintain their physical well-being
  • Instruction in a variety of motor skills and physical activities designed to enhance the physical, mental, and social or emotional development of every student
  • Development of and instruction in cognitive concepts about motor skills and physical fitness that support a lifelong healthy lifestyle
  • Opportunities to develop positive social and cooperative skills through physical activity participation and
  • Opportunities for professional development for physical education teachers to stay abreast of the latest research, issues, and trends in the field of physical education.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Healthy Students manages the PEP grants and supports efforts to create safe schools, ensure the health and well-being of students, teach students good citizenship and character, respond to crises, and prevent drug and alcohol abuse.
