Healthier bites served up in schools: New standards put in place this fall

More than a month into the new healthier standards for school lunches, Marshalltown Community School District Foodservice Director Vickie McVey said things are going well.

As a result of new USDA standards, there must be bigger portions of fruits and vegetables available as well as calorie limits for meals, using more whole grains and fat free milk.

The change wasn’t dramatic locally as Marshalltown was already heading toward healthier standards in recent years.

The conference started on Sunday afternoon with a motivational speech from the keynote speaker, Layton Zbornik. Zbornik shared the 10 keys to being a great leader that he learned during his life of being a radio DJ, an inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and as a motivational speaker. The rest of the evening was spent networking, as students had a chance to mingle over hors d’oeuvres, play games and attend a dance.

On Monday, the students attended several breakout sessions. Topics included Great Follower = Great Leader (More from Layton Zbornik); Know the difference between casual, business casual, and business professional dress; March of Dimes charity fundraiser; KPMG accounting careers; and Business Achievement Awards.

“The KPMG presentation was very informative and made a career in accounting sound interesting and fun,” said Rachel Faircloth, FBLA president.

FBLA is a career and technical student organization promoting education, service, progress, and leadership.

A chain reaction of kindness: Effort part of anti-bullying campaign at MHS

Let the chain reaction of kindness begin, from Marshalltown High School, to other schools and the community.

A group of MHS students have started an effort to write random acts of kindness they witnessed on a piece of orange paper then link them together. It is part of the Not In Our Town anti-bullying campaign.

The students have compiled hundreds of links from the school and are now looking for the community to submit their own links at MHS. The chain will be displayed at halftime of this Friday’s home varsity football game against Ottumwa.

MHS students named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists

Two Marshalltown High School students are semifinalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Benjamin Anzis and Joseph Metzger are among approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 58th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school students have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring.

About 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).  The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2013. Every finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 scholarships that will be awarded on a state representational basis. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 240 corporations or businesses for finalists who meet their specified criteria. In addition, about 200 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,800 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for finalists who will attend the sponsor institution.
