Anson students earn chance to be ‘Principal for a Day’

Third-grader Trevor Ketcham and fourth-grader Veronica Reynoso exercised their leadership skills when they took the reins at Anson Elementary as “Principals for a Day” March 16.

Trevor and Veronica were chosen to assist Principal Bea Niblock because of their hard work during the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. Teachers nominated students who worked hard and took the exam very seriously. Out of those nominees two names were drawn from a hat.

During their day-long tenure as Anson principals, Trevor and Veronica were tasked with all the day-to-day duties and responsibilities of a principal. They conducted classroom observations, worked lunchroom duty and recess and engaged in some problem solving work with a group of kindergarteners.

In the afternoon they met with Dr. Susan Pecinovsky, assocate superintendent for student achievement, to discuss curriculum.

Lenihan student writer wins state Letters About Literature competition

Juliana Osgood, a sixth grade student in Leah Mattox’s language arts class, has been selected as the state of Iowa’s first place champion of the Letters About Literature Level 1 Division.  Osgood and four of her classmates were recently recognized for their exemplary writing skills in the national reading-writing program.

LAL is a national reading promotion program of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, presented in partnership with Target and affiliate state centers for the book.  The program is designed to cultivate independent readers through inviting students in grades 4-12 to write a personal letter to an author, living or dead, and explaining how that author’s work changed the student’s way of thinking about themselves or the world.

Juliana was recognized for her poignant letter written to author Patricia MacLachlan, author of Edward’s Eyes. Her letter was selected from a pool of 532 letters submitted from 4th-6th grade students in Iowa.  Osgood stated, “Reading nearly two hours each night and getting feedback about my writing from my teachers has helped me become a better writer.  I have written a lot over the last two years at Lenihan, and that has helped me in processing my thoughts.” Juliana, her family, and teachers, have been invited to an award ceremony at the State Library in May. Her letter is now being considered for national recognition and the opportunity to earn a $10,000 grant for the library of her choice.

Also recognized for outstanding writing skills were finalists: Kyra Buckley and Ruth Doser, and semi-finalists Taylor Bacon and Destiny Aldrich.  Bacon wrote to the author of A Horse of Her Own while Aldrich wrote to Dan Poblockic, author of The Stone Child. Doser wrote to favorite author, J.K. Rowling, and Buckley shared an important lesson with author Mary Hogan from her book, Pretty Face.

Thirty students from Mrs. Mattox and Mrs. Finder’s afternoon language arts sections participated in the Letters About Literature program this year.  The lessons were collaboratively taught with Mrs. Roessler as part of the Extended Learning Program at Lenihan.  Mrs. Mattox commented, “We are extremely pleased with the recognition these writers have received.  Their diligence and our district’s new writing curriculum together have produced some strong writers.  To have a record five students recognized this year is very affirming.”

Woodbury Service Learners hold supply drive for Animal Rescue League

Woodbury Service Learners

Woodbury Service Learners place a large bag of dog food into their cart as they shop for pet food and supplies at Theisen's. The group received a $1,000 toward their supply drive to purchase the products, with Theisen's adding an addition $300 in a gift card and in-kind donations.

Last Wednesday the Woodbury Service Learners went on a shopping spree. The budget: $1000. The goal: to support their four-legged friends living at the Animal Rescue League.

The shopping trip to Theisen’s marked the culmination of a supply drive held Feb. 29-March 4 across the district and organized by the Woodbury Service Learners. The group consists of 12 Woodbury Elementary fourth graders who meet weekly to identify and address needs in the community.

Plans for the drive began in early January. The students have used the Reach Out Iowa model throughout the school year as a way of identifying community needs and brainstorming ways to have an impact. Many of the ideas included food drives, neighborhood cleanup and recycling among others.

The group decided they wanted to support the Animal Rescue league and determined a pet food and supply drive would have the greatest impact. Students decorated collection boxes (donated by PCA) and contacted principals to have boxes located at schools. The Service Learners also counted out flyers to send home with each preschool through sixth grade student. They also posted signs at Miller Middle School.

Besides the items collected at schools, the Service Learners received a $1,000 donation from a community member to purchase pet food and supplies. On March 9 the students went shopping at Theisen’s to use the donation. Theisen’s also donated a $100 gift card to the cause and allowed the Service Learners to use the employee discount, resulting in the equivalent of a $200 in-kind donation.

In total the students were able to purchase $1,300 in pet food and supplies for the Animal Rescue League.

The morning consisted of workshops based on the books; a sample of the workshops include a Civil War re-enactor, a magician, a puzzle workshop, egg art, a Skype session with author, Eric Berlin. In addition to attending two workshops, each team took a championship test over the authors and books.

Lenihan/Miller vocal music teacher selected for Simon Estes concert series

Brianna Yates, vocal music teacher at Lenihan Intermediate and Miller Middle schools, has been selected for the “Young Performing Artist” series as part of Simon Estes’ “Roots and Wings” tour. The series kicks off this weekend in Hampton, Iowa.

“This program was developed to give young artists a chance to perform,” Yates said. “Many students that pursue a performing major do not get real opportunities to be on big stages.”

The “Young Performing Artist” tour is focused on helping young performers improve their abilities and connect with different audiences. The program helps them improve their skills in public performance, educational outreach and media relations.

Yates’ selection for the program happened almost by accident. She was talking with Estes and tour manager Paul Ferrone about bringing the “Roots and Wings” concert to Marshalltown when they began to inquire about her background and musical aspirations.

“They asked me to prepare a small set of pieces to sing for Simon,” Yates said. “Afterward, told me about this program and how they wanted me to be the first from Iowa to take part in it.”

Yates and fellow young artist Jeremy Collier will spend March 11-12 performing in schools around Hampton and Franklin County, with the penultimate Young Artist Concert at 7 p.m. Saturday at Faith Baptist Church in Hampton.

The Hampton concert is just the first in the series.

“This program will allow me to prepare music as a true artist,” Yates said. “It makes me feel like a real celebrity – Simon and Paul have been so supportive of both my teaching and singing.  I am learning to juggle a full time job and still live my dreams on the side”

Yates, a soprano, received her bachelor’s degree in vocal music education and vocal performance from Iowa State University. While at Iowa State, she sang in the Iowa State Singers and was cast in several SOV productions and Opera Studio performances

MHS competes at Iowa Forensics League state contest

Eleven Marshalltown High School students competed at Iowa Forensic League’s state competition held March 3-5 on the University of Iowa campus. The students competed in seven different events and took home many accolades for their work in speech and debate.

The Marshalltown Forensic Team took fourth place in the speech sweepstakes, which is determined by how many individuals on the team make it into semi-finals and finals, and how well they did in finals. This is the first time in many years that Marshalltown has been in the top five of sweepstakes.

Gwen Morrison and Danielle Propst competed in Oral Interpretation, an event that mixes prose and poetry. Both made it to the semi-final round of competition. Other MHS competitors included: Adam Willman and Christian Kremer-Terry in Original Oratory; Ilene Finn and Theresa Miller paired up to compete in Duo Interpretation, as did Molly Finn and Abby Snyder; James Lindgren and Tray Hickie both competed in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking. James Lindgren also presented a Dramatic Interpretation. James made it to the final rounds in both Dramatic Interpretation and Domestic Extemporaneous, placing third in both events.

Lindgren was also one of seven students nominated for the Senior of the Year award. Each year seniors from across the state are nominated for this honor and coaches vote for the winner. Lindgren earned enough votes to come in second place.

In the debate division of the competition, Abby Snyder, Tray Hickie, Adam Willman, and Ilene Finn participated in Student Congress. Abby Snyder made it to the final congress house, which is a major accomplishment at the state level of competition. Molly Wilson and Danielle Propst paired up to compete in Public Forum Debate.
