MHS team grabs state Envirothon title

State Envirothon Champions: Joe Metzger, Adam Willman, Molly Finn, Brennan Goodman and Abby Snyder.

A Marshalltown High School Envirothon team is the 2012 state champion.

The team, named the “Whooping Cranes”, is comprised of MHS students Joe Metzger, Adam Willman, Molly Finn, Brennan Goodman and Abby Snyder, competed at Springbrook State Park in Guthrie Center. Their win earns them a place at the Canon International Envirothon Competition at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, June 22-28.

Envirothon is a team competition testing high school students on critical thinking skills and knowledge about environmental topics.

Marshalltown advanced to state after competing in one of five regional events comprised of 52 teams across Iowa. The top 15 teams from regionals were selected to compete at state.

After regionals the “Whooping Cranes” were ranked first in the state. The other MHS team, the “Whooping Colts” just missed the state contest, with a 16th place finish at the regional level.

At state the steams completed a 15-minute presentation on low-impact development, then were tested on four outdoor stations: soils, aquatic ecology, wildlife and forestry. The “Whooping Cranes” placed first in the oral presentation and soils contests and earned enough overall points to clinch the title.

At the international competition they will compete against teams representing 45 states and Canadian provinces for $75,000 in scholarships and prizes.
