Hands-on lesson teaches Lenihan students about bird habitats

A bird’s life isn’t so easy, at least that’s the lesson some Lenihan students learned during a hands-on experience with Marshall County Conservation this week.

Diane Hall, naturalist with Marshall County Conservation, spent two days at Lenihan teaching about birds and ecosystems. Students saw examples of nests and discussed why each bird’s nest met its needs.

Hall had the students use clothespins to mimic bird beaks and work in small groups to build their own nests. Each group received a “recipe” for their bird species, with a list of ingredients that goes into that type of nest. Using only the clothespin as their tool, the students had to work together to weave straw, branches, leaves and other materials into a suitable bird habitat.

Hall regularly conducts hands-on learning experiences for students. A recent lesson also included learning about how different birds adapt to having different beaks. Students were presented with different ecological environments (like a deep pool of water) and had to determine what kind of beak was needed for a bird to pick up food from the bottom of the pool.

New Latin Dance Group to host community event: Dance-a-thon Friday night at Roundhouse

Latin dancing is growing in popularity at Marshalltown High School thanks to a group of students who meet in a classroom after school twice a week to get moving.

The MHS Latin Dance Group was formed in October by Spanish teacher Charlotte Santana. Santana said teachers were asked by Principal Aiddy Phomvisay to form groups that increase student participation and Santana has done that with this club.

Artwork by Marshalltown Community School District students is part of the 2013 Youth Art Month Show at the State Historical Building in Des Moines.

Student art from Lenihan Intermediate and Woodbury and Fisher elementary schools will be on display with the creations of students from across Iowa during Youth Art Month in March. The month is a time to celebrate the value of art education, which develops critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, community awareness and visual communication skills.

The students from Lenihan with artwork on display are David Dickey, Kathy Del Real Sanchez and Jonathan McKeever. Mia Krukow from Woodbury and Caleb Lauer and Dillon Walsh from Fisher also have artwork on display.

The students are invited to a reception at the State Historical Building March 2, after which fifteen pieces of artwork – including work by Dillon Walsh – will be displayed at the governor’s office. Dillon has also been invited to a special reception with Governor Terry Branstad.

Both events are sponsored by the Art Educators of Iowa.

The 8th grade FIRST LEGO League (FLL) team from Miller Middle School placed third in the Project Award category at the State FLL competition Saturday, Jan. 19, at Iowa State University.

This year’s theme was “Senior Solutions”, which required each team to partner with a senior citizen in the community to explore and create innovative solutions to problems they face every day. The 8th grade team, named “The Sparkly Brown Paper Bags”, addressed macular degeneration, including both the physiological changes that occur in the eye and the lifestyle changes that result for senior citizens.  The team then designed a prototype of a portable light stick that can be attached to eyeglasses to provide hands-free direct light where needed.

The FLL judges recognized the Miller team for their extensive use of experts in their research.  Community members who assisted the team with their project included Dr. Connie Feldman from Eyecare Associates, Mrs. Betty Ulstad—the team’s Senior Partner, and Ms. Shyla Keeley.

FIRST LEGO League is an international program, created by FIRST and LEGO, designed to get students interested in and excited about science, technology and engineering.
