MHS senior named National Merit Scholarship semifinalist

Marshalltown High School senior Molly Finn is a semifinalist in the 57th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Finn is one of 16,000 academically talented high school seniors who have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $34 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship¨ award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and more than half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar¨ title.

National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and by approximately 440 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC’s goals of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.

Steps in the 2012 Competition

About 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools entered the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn sat scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. The Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student’s essay and information about the Semifinalist’s participation and leadership in school and community activities.

Spanish V class translates welcome packet for new residents

Spanish V students at Marshalltown High School put their bilingual skills to work for the Chamber of Commerce this year, translating a relocation packet for new residents.

Over half of the Spanish V students are alumni of the district Dual Language Program, which provides instruction for students in Spanish and English with the goal of dual proficiency. In Spanish V students engage in learning apprenticeships to hone their language skills and gain real-world experience.

The class already has an ongoing project translating McFarland Clinic’s quarterly newsletter and receiving feedback from their on-site translators. Last fall they began work on a 20-page translation of the Chamber relocation packet, which provides information to new residents about schools, churches, housing, employers, services, etc.

Working in small groups one day a week throughout the first semester, the 40 students researched proper translations, located reliable sources, and proofread material. Joan Jaimes, outreach counselor for the Marshalltown Education Partnership and a native Spanish speaker, helped edit the final product.

The project was presented to the Chamber and is now available for download from the Chamber of Commerce website: http://www.marshalltown.org/pdf/Spanishonlineversion.pdf

Franklin Elementary collects $1,547.90 for Relay for Life

Franklin Elementary students collected $1,547.90 for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, celebrating Wednesday by “throwing slime at cancer”.

Franklin students collected the money through a penny war. Principal Tim Holmgren presented a check for Relay for Life to Franklin teacher Shirley Mann during an assembly June 1. Mann told the students about her daughter, who lost her battle with cancer, and how their support of the Relay for Life supports research to find a cure.

Nancy VanWyk’s fourth grade class had the top points in the penny war and collected $215. As a reward the students took turns throwing “slime balls” at a poster depicting cancer cells.

Soldier visits Miller classroom that sent care packages to troops

US Serviceman Scott McLain spent Wednesday with Janine Miller’s language arts students, discussing his time overseas and thanking them for the 31 care packages they sent during the holidays.

McClain, who is back on leave from Afghanistan for 14 days to attend his son’s graduation, shared photos with the students and showed some of the items he brought back from the Middle East, including some semi-precious stones and a camel-bone box.

Students in Mrs. Miller’s class collected food, snacks and toiletries for the troops and small toys for them to hand out to Afghani children. The goal of 10 boxes was quickly eclipsed as the students’ generous spirit brought in more donations.

MCSD students dominate First in Math state contest

Front: Vyshnavi Gade, 4th grade state champion, Jarod Dolezal, 5th grade state champion, Mary Drummer, overall state champion. Back: Austin Tullis, 5th place overall state, Sydney Mann, overall state runner-up

Marshalltown students dominated the web-based First in Math contest this year, with students from MCSD taking the top five spots in the state, including the state championship.

The official FIM competition closed at the end of April, and points were tallied.  Mary Drummer, Lenihan 6th grader, came out at the head of the class with an amazing 18,800 points, taking the prize as the top overall individual champion in the state.  This is Mary’s second consecutive state title after winning last year in the combined grade category. She is the daughter of Roger and Ricarda Drummer of Marshalltown.

Not far behind in second place overall was Sydney Mann, Lenihan sixth grader, followed by Hoglan fourth grader,

Vyshnavi Gade, in third place.  Rounding off Marshalltown’s top five state placers was sixth grader, Austin Tullis. Students are able to compete at the local, state, and national level in both the individual and team categories. Each point earned represents two correct math problems. These students were competing in a field of several thousand students in first through eighth grades across the state.

“This program along with the district’s newly-adopted math curriculum seems to be paying off as math test scores are increasing and students are welcoming the challenge to solve harder and harder math problems,” said Karen Roessler, FIM coach at Lenihan.  “First in Math combines the students’ enjoyment of technology and the excitement of competition in the context of mathematics. FIM was adopted building-wide for the first time at Lenihan this year, thanks to the fundraising efforts of our student body.”

Not only did Marshalltown town have the top fourth and fifth grade individuals, Jarod Dolezal, Lenihan 5th grader, took top honors in the fifth grade individual competition.  Each student competing on the FIM site is able to complete leveled skills sets which range from basic fact mastery to eighth grade algebra as well as play education games based on math concepts and the 24 Game® which requires rapid mental math.

In the team categories, MCDS students also fared well with the Lenihan sixth grade team, “Robot”, coached by Karen Roessler, placing first in the state in a field of 50 teams and Mrs. Woerner’s team, “Helix”, placing fifth.  In the fifth grade category, the team coached by Ms. Gonzales placed third in the state.  The students in Mrs. Brockman’s and Mrs. Plett’s fourth grade teams placed fourth and sixth in the state against 85 other teams.
