MHS students Skype with Senator Grassley

Students in Kelley Dickey’s Contemporary Social Issues class spoke with US Senator Chuck Grassley this morning via Skype.

The students have been discussing the current financial situation and national debt, so Ms. Dickey wrote to the senator’s office asking if he would talk to students. This morning about 40 students (two class sections) gathered in the MHS Library to talk with the senator on Skype from his office in Washington.

“The purpose of this is the spirit of dialogue in representative government,” Grassley said, noting it was great to get the opinions of younger members of society.

The students asked questions on a wide range of current issues, including the national debt, welfare, Medicare and Medicaid, taxes and the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Baseball team starts reading program at Hoglan

Bobcat baseball players Alex Thompson and Tre Blackford read with students in Abbe Callahan's third grade class at Hoglan Elementary.

Thursdays are special for Hoglan Elementary third graders. It’s the day Bobcat baseball players from Marshalltown High School visit their classrooms – not to talk about sports, but to read books.

The weekly reading program was the brainchild of senior centerfielder Alex Thompson, who approached coach Steve Hanson with the idea.

“I had considered doing some team building activity in the past, but didn’t really have a good avenue for such an endeavor,” Hanson said.

The program started on Oct. 13, with players (sporting shirts made by Todd Thimesch at the Sports Page) visiting the Hoglan third grade classrooms and having students read books with them. During the fall there are 17 players visiting, though the numbers and players will change with the sports seasons.

Hoglan third grade teacher Abbe Callahan said her students light up when Thompson and teammate Tre Blackford visit her classroom. The excitement is not lost on the players.

“Whenever we show up the kids are super excited to see us,” Blackford said.

In Ms. Callahan’s classroom, students take turns individually or in pairs sitting with Thompson and Blackford, reading a book and talking about it as they go.

“It gives us and them something to look forward to,” Thompson said. “It gets us out of our ordinary high school routine and it’s fun.”

Hanson says the team hopes to continue the weekly reading program until May – just before the baseball season begins.

“The experience is quite rewarding seeing our players enjoy a greater sense of academic self-worth,” Hanson said. “The program also allows the guys to gain a realization that people look up to them for what they do because many of them understand the discipline and commitment it takes to be a high school athlete at this level.”

Exercise fever hits Woodbury Elementary

Woodbury Elementary students  are “getting physical” – physical exercise, that is! Several new initiatives – The Woodbury Walking Club, The Friday Dance Crew and the Classroom Movement program –  are getting students and staff up and moving.

The Woodbury Walking Club started last spring to reduce running on the blacktop before school while the soccer field was unavailable.

“The program is great!” said Eric Hunerdosse, Woodbury Learning Support Specialist. “Kids walk a circuit in the mornings and get cards punched for each lap they walk.”

When students get their punch card filled they get a reward of a string bag.

“We have a traveling trophy that goes to the room that does the most laps in a two week period of time,” he said.

Eric also helped form the Woodbury Friday Dance Crew. Every Friday at the lunch recesses, students are invited to dance the “Interlude dance”. This active dance was started at UNI and has been performed at UNI student and sporting events.

“There are only six steps and the students love jumping around to the beat of the music,” Eric said. The whole school did the dance at the October assembly to promote movement and good health.

PE teacher Don Wiser presented a program to the Woodbury staff on creative movement to help promote student achievement. According to Wiser, movement helps grow new brain cells in the student’s brain. Wiser developed the program as part of a class he took last summer.  He introduced the program to Hoglan and Anson elementary staff as well. Teachers can use the music and movement in their classrooms for 2-3 minutes to give students a physical break from the school workday.

Woodbury teacher Ashley Martinez says she is enjoying using the program with her kindergarten students.

“I have been doing the new exercise activities with the kids and they are LOVING it!” she said. “The kids love pretending to jump rope and run in place, they think is a game. I can see that it helps them to focus for the next activity.”

“Franklin Family Feud” celebrates positive actions

“Family Feud” was the name of the game Friday at Franklin Elementary, as the school celebrated positive student behavior.

Franklin students are asked to embody the positive actions and attitudes of “R” Cats: Respectful, Caring, Active Learners, Thoughtful Choices, and Stay Safe. By following these traits, students become “bucket fillers”, or people who support others with positive words and actions.

When students are witnessed exhibiting one or more of these traits, they are awarded a “bucket”. Participants in “Franklin Family Feud” were then selected from students who had been identified as “bucket fillers” so far this school year.

Franklin students earned an impressive 618 buckets before the Oct. 14 assembly – each bucket representing one occasion when teachers and staff witnessed a Franklin student fulfilling one of the “R” Cats traits.

During “Franklin Family Feud” student teams competed to answer questions about “R” Cats and how students can be recognized for good behavior.
